Most of Mahalo's page management requirements are are pretty straight forward and reasonable. However, there is one requirement that I feel is overly burdensome and unreasonable. I am going to assume that most people have lives outside of Mahalo, at least I'd like to hope they do. We all have family obligations, jobs, or even friends we want to hang out with. So how can Mahalo require its page managers to devote so much time to Mahalo?
These were the Mahalo page requirements as of April 6, 2010 taken from the Mahalo Page Management Guide:
1. Mahalo pages should have over 300 words of original text, written by you.
2. Mahalo pages should have at least 5 Fast Facts (How To pages should have at least 3 tips).
3. Mahalo pages should be objective, written from a neutral stand point. They are not written in conversational style but as encyclopedia entries.
4. Page managers should edit their pages on a regular basis every 7 to 10 days, making essential updates and otherwise improving the quality of their pages.
5. Mahalo pages should include citations to specific and detailed information not generally known.
I honestly think that No. 4 is absolutely insane. I don't know if any other site that forces its writers to edit their pages every 7 to 10 days. Can you even imagine how much time that would take you? There are Mahalo page managers that are managing hundreds of pages. For example, lets say that you are managing 200 pages. If you were to spend 5 minutes editing each page every 10 days, that would take you 16 hours every 10 days, or 50 hours per month.
Do you really have 50 hours to spend each month editing your Mahalo pages?
This may have been more reasonable if, you were making 4 or $500 a week. Then you would consider it your full time job.
